Season of Shadows (In Real Life)

Nov 9 and 10, 2017: Season of Shadows (In Real Life) was performed at Chocolaterian Cafe’s window displays in Madison’s east side, presented by the Madison Arts Commission BLINK program for temporary art. Performances by Borealis, Misa Rodriguez, Owen, Sawyer Johnson, Oliver Gruebel, Ande Johnson, and Sylvia Johnson. Photography by Jennifer Bastian and Duke Virginia. Installation assistance by Katie Huber.

Borealis and peer performers sat in a window display and replicated the process of interviewing that otherwise occurred in private for the Shadows project. While the performers talked, a computer sloppily mistranslated their speech to text, sometimes missing whole segments of the performers’ conversation. This speech-to-text was projected onto the performers and could be read, in part, from the street. Some guests huddled behind the back of the screen, from inside the cafe, in an attempt to listen to the conversations.

Borealis and performers were curious about the ways in which their private reflections throughout the multi-event Shadows project might not be translatable for public audiences.
